The colourful history of Belhar High School stretches over the course of 37 years.

Belhar Secondary started in January 1977 as the first High school in this area. It started under the name Proteaville Senior Secondary (from the protea on the school’s coat of arms). The first principle Mr. Denzil Rabie single-handedly started the school in temporary classrooms at Erica Primary, with 21 teachers and 470 learners. In July 1977, Mr H. Engel took the reins in the big move to our present building.

The school had many difficulties under the apartheid regime but always rose above it and is still continuing to rise.

In 2006 the WCED designated it one of the 10 “Arts and Culture focus schools” to be set up over the following 3 years. Following the Arts and Culture Focus learners participate in Dance, Drama, Visual Art, Design and Music. Between the love and grief of Belhar, something magical, something that attracts you, like a magnet, especially if you give up, it makes you believe in the inherent power sinking into thousands of young people encountered, as the motto of the school which has never been proved wrong: “Progressio Nisi per Diligentiam” which translates to Progress only through hard work.
